When Swedish artist Hilma af Klint died in 1944 at the age of 81, she left behind more than a thousand paintings and works on paper that she kept largely private  

Inspired by her mysterious and alluring Spirit, we have created a space to host those with open minds and a taste for adventure. Hilma was a classically trained fine artist, having studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Stockholm. She studied drawing, portraiture, and landscape painting. Though she earned money this way, she actively sought to unlearn the classical techniques she had acquired, instead developing a technique called “automatic drawing” in which she drew without allowing her consciousness to lead the process. Hilma af Klint was the 4th of five children, Victor af Klint, a naval officer, and Matilda Sontag. In 1872 her family moved to Stockholm. Hilma studied at Technical School (now the School of Applied Arts), and then took the lessons of portraiture and for 5 years, until 1887, continued her studies at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts.

A considerable body of her abstract work predates the first purely abstract compositions by Kandinsky. She belonged to a group called "The Five", a circle of women who shared her belief in the importance of trying to make contact with the so-called "High Masters" – often by way of séances. T his documentary makes a pretty convincing case for the admission of the Swedish artist Hilma af Klint into the boys’ club of abstract art, alongside Kandinsky, Mondrian et al. Af Klint was an Hilma was a classically trained fine artist, having studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Stockholm. She studied drawing, portraiture, and landscape painting. Though she earned money this way, she actively sought to unlearn the classical techniques she had acquired, instead developing a technique called “automatic drawing” in which she drew without allowing her consciousness to lead the process. Hilma af Klint, who was born in 1862 in Solna, Sweden, created a total of around 1000 paintings, sketches, and watercolors up to her death in 1944.

Swedish abstract painter Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) created her art five years before Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian and Kazimir Malevich, before the images of Carl Jung and Rudolf Steiner. Hilma af Klint was the first purely abstract painter to produce non-objective works in the early 1900s.
